Geek Furious the Podcast Episode 24 - Game of Thrones 2.08 Beyond Handjobs

Jess and Magnus discuss Game of Thrones episode 18, handjobs, and other things Jennifer Love Hewitt will do. Also, we go way off topic and discuss Dan Harmon's issues with Sony, the importance of directors vs editors, Ricky Gervais, and other things that seemed really interesting in the moment but upon reflection could either be terribly interesting or painfully boring. YOU DECIDE! Totally unedited. RAW.

  1. So were you trying to underscore the importance of a good editor by showing what happens when you have a bad one?

    I kid...I kid because I love...not really.

Anyway, dragonglass = obsidian, which has been used as edged weaponry by various real-world cultures through the ages. On the show, it and what's found with it is a pretty important discovery. Given that it was hidden in an old cache in the middle of nowhere under spooky First Men markings, I'm thinking that's not much of a spoiler.

I'm not sure what that means.

    2. Bad joke; nothing more. I was implying that the podcast was unedited (or badly edited) because of its length. In truth, I thought the Community stuff was pretty interesting. I've got the last 6 or so episodes saved up on my DVR. Haven't watched them yet, but looking forward to it. I'm assuming it's going to be a last hurrah before the "management" change.

    3. The only thing I edited was the first 12 seconds and the last 5. Normally I edit a lot.

  2. Interesting podcast. Liked the parts where you talked about editing and the Dan Harmon stuff.

I don't think CBS is totally oblivious to Emmy nominations, though. Credit The Good Wife's chances of getting them for it staying on air despite its ratings being similar to the cancelled CSI Miami and Unforgettable.

    1. No. I liked it. It's just "recency" at work. There was a break between hearing the first part and the second part.

BTW--Jaime Lannister only had one scene in the entire 2nd book and they did that scene earlier in the season. Practically everything we are seeing is an invented storyline to give the actor something to do in the season.

It was an episode that is hard to comment on because it is a lot of set-up for the final two.

It's interesting that some of the divergences from the book totally work and others don't and seem obviously weak.

I hadn't thought of the escape attempt in that context, but it makes sense. However, a lot that follows is borrowed from book 3.

I suppose there are practical considerations when filming: giving the actors some screen time, saving up for CGI (hence, Dany's weird divergence from the books as mentioned in the podcast), etc. that you don't really worry about when writing a novel.

    1. I haven't read book 3. I read Book 1 AFTER watching the first season. I read Book 2 right before the season started.

I have to decide which mode of viewing is better.

The reality of a TV show is that the audience kind of expects you to continue with mostly the same actors/characters as they saw in the first season. The books don't follow those rules.

For instance, you don't hire a guy like Charles Dance to just use him in a few scenes. Hence, his direct involvement with other characters was "enhanced" compared to the books.

  4. HGF--
I know you plan to talk about Community in your next podcast. Maybe you can use these stats:

Total Live + 7 Viewers: 4,089,000 (reg. TV only)
Dan Harmon Followers on Twitter: 129,000
    % of Viewers: 3%

If I could add in Hulu, illegal DL, and other viewers, the 4 million would be higher, of course.

    1. That's from the most recent episode that Live + 7 came out on. April 26th. Shoulda said that.
