CHUCK Fans! Want A Movie? Buy More!

I am seeing tons of people around the Internet creating their own Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, and whatever else is the new cool thing to do account that promises to work to either "save CHUCK" for another season or to "get CHUCK a movie!" And not a single one of the sites I have looked at seems to understand one basic truth.

WB is in the business of making money.

Also, half these people who claim to have ways of getting CHUCK a movie don't seem to have their facts straight. You know, like that NBC doesn't own the show. That's a very important bit of information you should have before starting any kind of fan campaign. Or that Internet petitions are laughed at by studio executives.

So I am going to make this really simple. Here is your model for the next ten years, or however long it takes for WB to get into the black (meaning, make a profit) with CHUCK:

BUY MORE; GIVE MORE; GET MORE CHUCK!

It is that simple. Spend money. Don't share your DVDs. BUY NEW ONES. GIVE THEM TO PEOPLE. Don't have money? Then get some. Still don't have money? Convince someone who loves you to spend their money for you. Can't find someone who loves you enough? I'm not suggesting you rob a bank...

Buy CHUCK gear. Buy CHUCK DVDs and Blu-Rays. Buy anything that is officially owned by WB that relates to CHUCK. Don't buy a fan made shirt for CHUCK. WB won't see any of that and it won't get you more of the show you love.

You can use this link to go straight to my Amazon Store that's related to my CHUCK site by clicking HERE or clicking directly below for the specific seasons.

*You may be able to find cheaper prices somewhere around the Internet or in stores than the links I provided. Granted, Amazon does free shipping and doesn't charge tax in many areas, so you save there.

Whether you order through those links, or do something else, at least stick to what will work. Buying OFFICIAL CHUCK products. Also, get ready for a VERY LONG wait, if it ever happens, to get more CHUCK in any shape or form.

UPDATE: I should have added this originally, but you can also buy CHUCK gear currently from the NBC Store and tell 'em GeekFurious.com sent ya! I imagine that eventually that merchandising will revert back to WB to sell on their site. Though, if you are on the WB lot, I believe you can buy some unique things there.

UPDATE2: Here is the apparent "box set" for CHUCK. Order at your own risk (I say that because I still haven't seen what makes it worth that price).

    1. Convince other people to spend their money.

    2. Ask Netflix to stream Chuck. Then get people to watch it and develop a cult following like for Arrested Development. Tweet #NetflixStreamChuck to @Netflix.

      Delete
    3. Why is tweeting better than sending them a direct correspondence?

      Delete
    4. LOL! Oh, MediaSavant... you crack me up with your no-brainer logic.

Exactly. Why would tweeting be better? It wouldn't. I've been telling people that mailing letters is 10,000 times more effective than a tweet but they refuse to accept it. Network and studio executives STILL talk about people writing them letters. They talk about it because THEY ARE AFFECTED BY IT.

Tweeting and shit like that is still mostly ignored by them.

      Delete
    5. I would think that an internet-based business like Netflix would pay more attention to social media, though, than television execs do.

Not that I'm saying don't write a letter. But doing both couldn't hurt. ;)

    6. Netflix isn't any more Internet based as a business than NBC, FOX, or ABC. They all have their own streaming distribution networks. CBS does as well but on a smaller scale.

So, Netflix should be viewed as something of a pay-cable service. They essentially syndicate shows and are doing some minor entry into producing their own material. They will still look at the same data as everyone else when looking toward licensing the rights to a show. And WB, for their part, will want to get the most possible amount of money for their property.

Fans think in very simple terms. "I want, they can provide, so make it happen." And it doesn't work like that.

    1. I think being able to stream CHUCK will help in getting people into the show... but won't be a huge boost to its profitability unless people then spend money on CHUCK gear.

      Delete
    2. Any idea what kind of license fee Netflix pays producers to stream shows?

      Delete
    3. Yep. It isn't much. Netflix is right now like the iTunes of streaming. The industry sees it as a way to make extra money but they feel like they aren't getting remotely what they should be based on how many subscriptions there are.

Like, 6 seasons of LOST on Netflix nets the studio $45 million per year. That show was wildly more popular than CHUCK. So, 5 seasons of CHUCK would go for how much? $8 million per year? I bet that is part of why the show isn't on there. WB wants more.

      Delete
  10. I'm not sure if this has mentioned before, but instead of campaigning for a movie how about getting Netflix to produce the show. Arrested Development fans caught a break after 6 years with Netflix bring the show back with its full original cast. I wonder if that would be a more viable option. Plus, I know I would pay more in a subscription to help pay for it since it is more expensive e to make than Arrested Development. Just a thought.

    1. You can't compare AD to CHUCK. Totally different animal. Plus, CHUCK is far deeper in the financial hole than AD was when it ended its run. Not to mention the dozen or so Emmy nominations and handful of wins that AD got. Profitability and prestige can carry you a long way.

      Delete
    2. Yeah that's true. I'm just thinking it was a more viable option than a movie. Wishful thinking from someone who is still in mourning like everyone else. Lol was CHUCK really in the red for the WB?

      Delete
    3. Jared, I asked someone at a network about that (though, not WB) and he said he is confident WB will pursue all options, including Netflix. I'd say wait to see what happens on the syndication front first, then start working on campaigning for Netflix. First WB has to think the show is going to be profitable. So just buy, if you can. That will motivate WB quicker and more than any annoyance campaign some are already organizing.

      Delete
    4. Thanks for looking into the Netflix idea. Maybe something like that will happen sooner or later. I know I'm tired of my twitter feed filled with movie campaigns. Personally I think a movie is a bad idea because it's a 1 shot deal unlike episodes that give you more stories to explore. Plus, you have to wonder if the cast and crew would be willing to come back after a hiatus.
As for buying CHUCK stuff, I've got that covered. I already have the DVDs and just like Marketing 101 I'll buy stuff off of NBC when they do free shipping. Something about saving $10 makes me buy more at full price. LOL

      Delete
  11. Yes Buying DVD's and anything Chuck related will help but getting Chuck in to Sydication will help more because it will expose Chuck to a wider audience thus getting more people to buy DVD's and other Chuck products

    4. Last night, Chucksters got #GoodbyeChuck, #NerdHerdForLife and #GoodbyeBeard (because Joshua Gomez shaved his beard!) to trend both in the US and Worldwide! Can we do it again this weekend for #ChuckMovie? This might get sponsors and movie makers talking…

      Delete
    5. "Sponsors" have nothing to do with getting a movie or any other additional Chuck material made. It's up to WB and WB is not monitoring Twitter for Chuck mentions. They are calling the accounting department and asking what the revenue is from Chuck.

How many times does this have to be said before it sinks in?

NBC, WB and everyone else knows Chuck fans can make noise. But, as NBC's Greenblatt even noted, it didn't convert to ratings (off of which NBC makes money). Nobody cares about twitter trending. They are getting suspicious of it and afraid that it doesn't convert to anything meaningful.

What's meaningful? MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY.

      Delete
    6. Maybe if we could trend CHUCK movie shit every day for a year, then MAYBE, but probably not, someone at WB would be like... "Oh man, if only that translated to money."

    1. I think the biggest reason why you see all these fan campaigns pop up is because people want fame. They want to become the next Wendy Farrington (who created the Subway campaign). They want to become heroes of the fandom. And even when they are not, they will still take credit for it (look at the people who think they saved CHUCK for a 5th season with their campaigns that no one at the network noticed).

I'm here to tell you what will work. Simple as that. But since it takes ACTUAL EFFORT, the lazy shits who think typing and pushing their mouse clicks at the studio will work, will continue to do that.

And I PROMISE YOU, if we ever get a movie, those twits will claim credit even though no one ever officially acknowledges their efforts.

  18. True, very true. Sometimes I get a little confused with Betty but that could be just because I hate child abusers in general so that character was always going to fuck me off. Vince Gilligan is pretty good with characters. David Simon was/is awesome. Graham yost is pretty good. In animation Adam Reed is the fucking bomb!

Fedak in hindsight did a terrible job with his characters, weak ass plot became more important than consistency in the characters. I mean who really tuned in for the fucking plot on Chuck? ever?

This was a love story and that is all that should have mattered, Fedak you numpty.

On another Chuck note. HGF, do you think the writers missed something HUGE with the whole Chuck-Fu thing? I thought for sure it would be completely in Chuck's character to whip out Spidey-like quips during fights. You know, for mocking humor.

It would've made Zac's fight scenes fresh/fresher and give their action sequences that CHUCK vibe. Your 2 cents?

    ReplyDelete
  28. That had to be the very sexiest and most passionate moment in the entire series. I certainly hope the writers have learned a lesson and will never, and I mean NEVER, bring anyone romanticly between the Walkertowsi's. This name dies when they become family Bartowski. Maybe even a little Chucky or Sarah-Sam Lisa would bring some interesting twists to the show.

  29. Let's be realistic. signing a petition is not going to help chuck's cause. i have watched chuck for 5 years and as much as it pains me to see it go, i know its chances to getting the show back are very slim. what will truly help is allowing WB to make its money back and then they might actually consider it. Instead of watching shows online/downloading them, we all NEED to buy the shows and chuck gear from nbc or amazon. we can get a movie, its just going to take a collective effort to pitch in.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There is no chance to get the show back... at least on TV.

But yes, as the article notes, the only way to get the movie is to buy stuff (especially those DVD/BDs right now). CHUCK fans allowed perception of strength, due to social networks, to carry them while not doing much campaigning for actual monetary sacrifices for the thing they loved.

This is why I have always said that FIREFLY fans are what CHUCK fans claim to be. Browncoats put their money where their passion was and proved time and time again that they may be small, but they are strong.

It is now CHUCK fan time.

  35. I think that Chuck could have a much bigger profit if the show was aimed at an international audience (since the main thing that counts for the producers is money) I think that by streaming it online (rather than on TV) and making it available to audiences all over the world is a great idea. If they requested a small fee from the viewer then maybe they could receive a much bigger profit than by airing it on TV. The great thing about this show is that its fans are incredibly loyal. I for example would love to pay a fee (before every episode), knowing that by doing this I am supporting Chuck. I’ve read so many comments from people all over the world, who would love to support the show, but can’t watch it on TV, so they can’t really help. I believe Zachary Levi mentioned the idea of making an online movie during an interview. The producers do not realize how much fans this show has all over the world. The main reason why Chuck is the #1 most pirated show is because people from foreign countries can’t watch it while it airs. It is also a great idea because a lot of people could not watch it on Fridays (work etc.) , and if it was online they could watch it whenever they want. I am a huge fan of this show and I want to find a way for it to continue. Maybe WB could make this possible…

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's just not that simple. If it was, that's what they would do. Plus, the International support you claim is proven by what evidence? DVD sales? Nope. TV ratings overseas? Nope. So what then?

      Supposition? Conjecture? Yep.

Josh & Chris stated in many of their interviews that the ending will not satisfy everyone and that they will probably get hate mail for what they did but these are the same two guys that have given us fans a show that we have loved for over 5 years. a show that has impowered the viewers to the point that NBC allowed J&C three extra seasons of Chuck that we might have not gotten. As fans we should be happy with that. Watch the last two episodes again and again I have several times already.I used to be a Trekker but now I`m a Chuckster. Upon further investigation . I have uncovered a MAJOR conspiracy at Warner Brothers involving the show " CHUCK " . Sources inside WBTV have confirmed to me that studio had asked Mr. Schwartz and Mr Fedak to come up with the mist ambiguous ending they could think of in order to infuriate audiences so that they could in the future realistically make some money off of the show themselves and not just the pennies NBC was throwing there way . The same credible source also said that a big screen adaptation was secretly in the works with a few A list names floating about behind the venture .

When asked to comment on the validity of the story , a WB executive replied " CHUCK is a huge moneymaker for us . I think it's obvious that we would go down that route eventually " .

Besides it's going to show when Chuck gets back on the air and the amount of people that signed the petitions aren't watching the show. Not saying that they aren't going to work, all I'm saying is that we have to come up with a more effective way to show the networks that there are fans out there who will dedicate time to watch the show.

    1. Internet petitions NEVER FUCKIN' WORK in getting a show back or a movie for a cancelled show made. Simple. You can get a million signatures and no one at the studio will give two shits. They are too easy to fake. I organized a petition campaign years ago that got 30,000 signatures accomplished in one day... utilizing the power of 5 people. It's fuckin' easy.

They don't like being called at their offices. They don't like it when you knock on their door. It just pisses them off. They DO still respond to handwritten letters (some executives consider one letter to be equal to 5,000 people). But CHUCK had its reprieves already. It got all the benefit of the doubt from the network and studio.

NONE OF THAT SHIT WILL WORK ANYMORE. It's too fuckin' late, you monkeyfucked dipshit. I mean, sir. I hold you in the highest regard even though you are totally clueless.

      Delete
    2. Respectfully, I meant... respectfully.

      Delete
    3. Why are people just not understanding that a petition won't work? IDGI. Just buy the DVD/merchandise. Simple. They want to see money. Signatures online mean diddly squat.

I didn't sign nothing. I brought S1-S5 on DVD and a Chuck poster.

      Delete
    4. Because they have spent so many years being fed lies by fansite liars and idiots that they BELIEVE IT. They want it to be true because it is easy to get petitions signed on the Internet.

You know that Star Trek petition that got a MILLION signatures and got the show back on the air way back in the olden times before the Internet? Yeah. Those weren't online, anonymous signatures. Those were HAND WRITTEN.

You know the fan campaigns that got REMINGTON STEELE and QUANTUM LEAP back on the air way back in the olden days? Yeah, those were HANDWRITTEN LETTER CAMPAIGNS.

And you know what network executes TO THIS DAY note as an effective way to be heard? Handwritten letter campaigns! Because they can trace that back to a REAL FUCKIN' PERSON. And you know when CHUCK was renewed for a third season, the president of NBC said this about why it was renewed and not MY NAME IS EARL:

"EARL fans didn't write any letters." CHUCK fans did.

You know what the FOX big shot said recently about FRINGE? He asked fans not to write him letters because he couldn't handle them right now. Which is exactly why you write letters. THEY RECEIVE THEM and someone reads them. And then they get brought into fuckin' meetings by executives who want to save the show you love and they use them as leverage.

Internet petitions would get laughed out of the room because it is so easy to fake those. And yet fans put more effort into getting a million bullshit signatures on an online petition signed than getting just ONE THOUSAND people to write handwritten letters... which would be far more effective.

It's insanity. It's the stupidity and laziness of fandoms.

Anyway, thank you for your purchases and your effort in the cause. :)

    1. Just spread the word about buying. It really falls on CHUCK fans to keep spreading the message of what will work. Spend more time doing that than wasting time getting people to sign petitions.

And remember that this is not going to happen overnight. WE WILL GET MORE if we don't expect immediate results and don't give up. It may seem daunting at times, but keep getting people into the show and keep spreading the message.

  57. HGF. In your opinion ? What killed the show from Season 1? Poor writing? Low ratings from poor writing? Not enough advertising ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Poor writing? It only got better after season 1 (though, stalled out in season 4). No, it just didn't catch on with people. They were looking for something else. Plus, what really killed it was when HOUSE moved to Monday nights. From that point on, it seems like a big part of the audience left. And then, as with most shows, as the seasons went on, the audience dropped.

It is likely the serialized aspect of the show turned people more toward the procedural stuff. Plus, it was also going up against big CBS shows while on Mondays. The move to Friday was expected to result in less viewers but the drop was bigger than expected. And part of that is likely that people just didn't tune in on Fridays. Another part... the wedding happened. Season 5 was only necessary to get syndication. Otherwise, we got everything the show really needed in season 4.

  58. Watched ending of Season 3. I found plenty of story lines for future movies if written. Phase 2, Aries papers, Triangulum, Fornax Group, Cygnus. Steven Bartowski was a spy for 20 years. Mary is still a spy semi-retired and now a grandmother. Ellie and Devon can stay in the background as Doctors but Ellie can work on intersect projects in a controlled environment. Since Chuck has the new intersect, word leaks out there is a pristine intersect somebody wants to perfect. Sarah has her mind back fears for Chucks live/protector/wife. Shaw is still alive and still holding a grudge against the Bartowski's. Casey and Verbanski, Morgan and Alex shows her black belt skills. Jeffster musicians/spies. Big Mike working for Subway/Buy More doesn't believe anybody is a spy. General Beckman needs her special team for this mission. The more the merrier. The writers will have plenty of time to complete the story line arc not being rushed and complete the plot holes. Remember the Family that spies together stays together.

    2. I think it’s an unspoken agreement. I think everybody would pick up their pocket protectors and Converse sneakers and come back to do it all again." Keep the fan base going, keep talking about it, let the networks know, let the writers and the actors and actresses know...we want more Chuck!

      Delete
    3. The actors would all do it again, if schedules allowed it. But actors don't make the decision to make more. Hell, the producers don't even make those decisions. It's all going to be the studio. They own the rights. But at this point, the studio is looking for a way to make money on the material THEY ALREADY HAVE.

That will be DVD/BD sales, merchandising, and syndication. The faster they make their money back through those avenues, the sooner fans can start writing letters and actually campaigning for them to make a movie (or whatever else). Campaigning for a movie now will just waste a lot of energy and time... and then when you really need people to rally, they will have given up.

    2. I loved Chuck but what killed it for me was that they didn't release shows to the Internet. What that meant was that when I couldn't watch episodes on the network's schedule--I was left out in the cold. It's an outdated paternalistic (or paranoid) model and that fear of loss (of revenue?) killed the show.

But it had a habit of adding millions of other views in PVRing, online viewing, iTunes and downloads. And It did well on DVD. They'll keep it alive, Warner will make movies and eventually make a ton of money. I will always love CHUCK.

    1. You got ONE thing right in that response.

Millions in DVR. It never had millions in online viewing, iTunes, or downloads. More like hundreds of thousands COMBINED. And it did well on DVD? Where did you come up with that? It has done mediocre at best in DVD sales.

    2. Through Bullet Train, Chuck Season 5 had an average of 4.2 million Live + 7 day viewers. That was a lift of about 900,000, give or take from the Live + Same Day number. That was a decrease from the lift of 1.1 million it got in seasons 3 & 4.

NBC actually used to publish a document counting online viewing in season 4. I used to be able to find it on their press site, but it's gone. I can't recall Chuck's exact or approximate numbers, but other NBC shows like The Office and Community had much more.

I did find an article TVBTN wrote about the NBC numbers in 2008 and they have a link to a 2008 accounting of Chuck's online viewing in this article:

Now she's as glamorous as the stiletto-heeled, sports-car-driving Sarah Walker character she portrays. But on Chuck, art also imitates our tough economic life. Chuck and Sarah's startup private-spy business, Carmichael Industries, is flat broke. Why? The inexperienced entrepreneurs blew through their seed capital by unwisely purchasing elaborate weapons systems—and outfitting their secret headquarters with vintage arcade games."I'm so shocked you people are running out of money," deadpanned one of Chuck and Sarah's clients.

Chuck Bartowski, ace computer geek at the BuyMore, is not in his right mind. That’s a good thing. Ever since he unwittingly downloaded stolen government secrets into his brain, action, excitement and a cool secret- agent girlfriend have entered his life. It’s a bad thing, too. Because now Chuck is in danger 24/7.

The 19 disc set is expected to carry over the same specs and supplements as the individual season releases including: Declassified Scenes; Chuck’s World – An inside look at character development and casting sessions; Chuck on Chuck – Series Stars Zachary Levi and Joshua Gomez join creators Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedek for some point/counterpoint; Chuck vs. the Chuckles – aka: The Gag Reel; and Chuck’s Online World – a gallery of web originated mini-featurettes.
