21-Days of CHUCK! Day 13: Bromance is Sexy

There is nothing quite so wonderful as a guy-romance, aka bromance. The platonic love between two men who want to spend every waking second with each other and when not together, pine for the next time they will be able to just talk about whatever makes their love so special.

On this show, there have been several close male friendships. Some qualify as bromances while others are borderline. And perhaps one or two masquerader as bromances but aren't. Let's see what qualifies.

Chuck and Morgan
Total bromance. These two can't live without each other. Chuck loves Morgan as much as Morgan loves Chuck. They would be happy just hanging out all day playing Call of Duty on XBOX, drinking Mountain Dew, and peeing into bottles so they don't have to get up off the couch.

Chuck and Bryce
In college, yes. These two were major nerdboy bromancers! They were totally smitten with each other and probably stared longingly at each other's reflections in their computer monitors as they coded the next great RPG. However, once Chuck thought Bryce got him expelled and stole his girlfriend, that bromance ended. It could have been rekindled after Chuck found out the truth about Bryce, but by that point he had essentially stolen Bryce's significant other. But since we don't speak poorly of the dead, let's just remember them as a college bromance.

Chuck and Awesome
Well, they are actually bros now. And they love each other as much as two men can on a platonic level. However, they wouldn't hang out and play video games or code RPGs or anything like that so this one is questionable. I go with no bromance. Just bros.

Morgan and Casey
Not a bromance but these two are close. However, Casey is more a big brother or father figure to Morgan. Plus, he could be Morgan's dad some day.

Jeff and Lester
This would seem like a bromance but is it one? These two happen to be friends because they have no other options. No one else wants to be their friend. More like friends of necessity. However, once Jeff regained his sobriety, the two formed an understanding and a closeness that qualifies them as part of a bromance. So, no bromance until season 5.

Casey and Captain Awesome
Potential romance. The two definitely respect each other and of all the men in Chuck's life that Casey has come across, Devon is the only one he sees as an alpha male type. Given time, these two would enter into a full blown bromance.

Chuck and Casey
Definitely not! Friends? Sure. Partners? Yes. But no bromance. Even now, as Chuck is Casey's boss, I think the colonel would like to choke him out just for old time's sake.

Captain Awesome and Morgan
The Captain could probably end up in a bromance with any man but during a period of time, Morgan was too obsessed with Ellie for it to work out. And then Devon found out about the spy world before Morgan. So, to Morgan, Awesome is just too awesome to be bromanced by the bearded one.

Did I miss any? What do you all think? What did I get wrong? OMG!

  1. I always thought we didn't get nearly enough Chuck/Bryce scenes during Matt Bomer's time on the show.

You didn't mention Cole Barker but then again he only appeared in two episodes. I liked his scenes with Chuck, and wouldn't have minded seeing him return but sadly that never happened.

    1. I considered mentioning Cole Barker and even Daniel Shaw, but since Cole really never developed into anything more than a two-off, and Shaw became an enemy, I left them out.

  2. I guess I never thought of Chuck and Bryce as a bromance, but I can see it. He could have been sort of Morgan's substitute when Chuck went away to college.

  3. The Casey/Morgan relationship is really hard to define...it's not quite paternal or sibling but there's not enough shared interest to make it pure bromance. I would say it's more of a mentor & wayward apprentice dynamic with a splash of grudging affection on Casey's part. I get more of the paternal vibe from the Morgan/Big Mike relationship. Plus...how weird is it that Morgan could leave this show with possibly TWO father's (Big Mike & John Casey)...and did we ever find out what happened to Papa Grimes? Now that I think about it, I’m surprised that wasn’t a side adventure of the dbag Morgansect…and kinda relieved.

Looking at your analysis I’m inclined to believe that bromance within the Chuck universe behaves almost like a genetic trait...a dominant recessive gene. Chuck and Morgan are both 'XX' dominant bromance, so it was empirical destiny that they would form THE definitive Bromance. This also explains why all other bromances (of differing strength) seem to involve these two individuals. Awesome and Bryce are of the 'Xx' variety...they have the potential to form a bromance but it’s not assured and its formation & strength is dependent upon the make-up of the potential bro. And Casey is fully recessive 'xx' so he's incapable of forming Bromances, but can display fleeting characteristics in the presence of a fully dominant Bromance carrier. Yup, I'm a NERD...I just did a post about the inheritance probability of bromance...I'm going to miss this show and the weird ways it makes my brain bendy.

  4. Not exactly bromance, but maybe you could have mentioned Big Mike's relationship with Chuck, and mostly with Morgan. But again, how to call it? Fathermance? LOL

Btw, you, of all people, typing "there" for "their" made me cringe... :)

    1. I did forget Big Mike... sigh. As for the spelling mistake, that's all it was, I'm not a grammatical idiot. :)

  5. I think some fans want Cole back so Chuck can say Sarah is now my muffin, lol. Which is not the case since Chuck is Sarah's muffin :)

I liked Cole a lot and would have liked him to come back, he gave Chuck some awesome advice when he knew Sarah wanted Chuck. That takes class my friends, when a person knows that he lost the girl (and a hawt one at that) to then step aside and give advice to said guy is awesome in my books.

Was Shaw ever Chuck's friend or even mentor? I mean he was kind of mentory in 3.04 and 3.05, then he was cold to him in 3.07, slapped and punched him a lot in 3.08, wanted to blow him up in 3.09, wanted him to kill in cold blood for the first time in 3.11, Shaw was ok to Chuck in 3.12 and in 3.13 threatened to kill him and 3.18/3.19 killed his father.

So if there was an arc in there where Chuck and Shaw ere buds I missed it and missed it by a mile and also he sucked as a mentor and a spy.

Having Morgan as a friend just shows how sweet Chuck is and does not mind hanging out with such an idiot. I mean Casey, Sarah, Bryce, Cole, etc are all intelligent, good looking, tall, good looking, hot, suave, sexy...where was I? oh yeah they look like popular kids and always probably were popular kids and so it is great that Chuck took the time to be friends with someone who was not any of those things and never dumped him when something better came along, that shows character!

Casey...if only Casey would soften up to Chuck, I think he did and did the most over the years to proactively put Chuck and Sarah together. All those jabs about Bryce and Cole to Chuck...to make Chuck man up. All those digs to Sarah about how Jill is a great asset. Casey may have been the best brother of them all.

  6. Could Chuck and Shaw have developed a bromance? Maybe in other circumstances. Shaw seemed kinda fond of Chuck at first up till Other Guy. His biggest problem was always with Sarah and the CIA. Plus he was just too focussed on his job (and revenge), like Casey. Chuck really was all about family, friends and love. Shaw was more like a mentor figure to Chuck at first, but then they soon became rivals and mortal enemies.

Why do people insist that Shaw was a bad spy? He outsmarted team B more than once and almost killed them 3 times. He also almost took over the CIA. I way I see it is that the plots in this show just don't hold up to serious examination, at least most of them. Shaw is just as good a spy as the rest.

  7. I think shaw was supposed to be chuck before he lost his wife. Shaw was supposed to be what chuck could potentially end up as if Chuck had a relationship with Sarah and she died. Shaw was supposed to be a warning, a lesson, a whatever....that if Chuck wanted to be a hero it costs a spy and costs them big. But sadly the show immaturely relapsed into the teenage Josh Schwartz crap and any nuance that shaw should have been embedded with was lost. A flashback would have really helped put his perspective into context, an episode they should have done instead of Mask.

    1. Interesting view. I actually see Shaw much more like a Sarah without her Chuck. Remember what she did in Phase Three? Yeah. She wasn't exactly friendly. Actually, maybe Santa Suit is Shaw's Phase Three. :D

I enjoy Mask a lot (and I know other who do, lol!) but a flashback episode of Eve/Shaw before she died would have been great. After all, Shaw IS an important character in the show.

    2. Shaw is NOT important, if you go back and listen to chuckyoutuesday American hero podcast HGF brought up a good point...they lost the shaw character. He was too many things (spy, mentor, friend, boyfriend, enemy, etc) but none of them were deep enough. I Agree with Ryan McGee it was not totally Routh's fault it was the writers namely Fedak. He was passable as the bad guy but not by much.

  8. Shaw didn't seem like the kind of guy who could have a bromance with anyone. He struck me as the kind of guy who walked into a room and felt he was superior to everyone else and, thus, didn't have buddies. A loner.

  9. Shaw had Kryptonite in his brain. A loner. His character was not developed enough to form a bromance with anybody. Since he's still alive ? Shaw and Cole ? Nahh!! P.S. Casey would be Morgan's father-in-law. Big mike is his step-father.

  10. Shaw is not passable as the bad guy; he's the best antagonist Chuck has ever had. And I also think his whole arc is one of the best in the whole show, flaws and all, IMO! To each their own as they say. ;)

    1. Yep... unless you are a crazy shipper, in which case he isn't because you are CRAZY!

    2. Was Shaw's whole arc superbly executed? No. But when I view it as a whole, from beginning to end, his arc was interesting and intense. His story brought a new kind of drama to the show. But yeah it helps that I'm not a crazy shipper. :P

And the professional critics and some fans can say whatever they want about it, but I don't have to agree with them. I like what I like. My opinion is the only thing that really matters to me.

    3. As an addendum to what I previously said, I think Shaw was generally a longer. He was a military school guy who was probably always driven to be the top of the class and in the hierarchical, disciplinary environment there that doesn't encourage hanging out with the guys and playing video games.

His relationship with Eve, as a result, was a revelation to him and very, very precious. But, we all know how that worked out. He buried himself in the work of taking down whoever was responsible for her death. Then, it all unraveled.

    4. @MediaSavant: I totally agree with that. He probably was also an only child with wealthy parents who always pushed him to be #1. I don't imagine them to be very loving, more like career oriented, so that when Shaw met Eve (who I imagine as a very bright, outgoing an strong person) he was totally smitten, much like Sarah with Chuck. He's so much like Sarah pre Chuck, IMO.

  11. To me there are only 2 bromance Chuck and Morgan and Morgan and John Casey. Chuck and Morgan is the main one for sure and Morgan and Casey I think it's there in season 4 with eating breakfast and stuff like that in season 5.

    1. I don't think that's evidence of a bromance. That's evidence of habit forming.
