21-Days of CHUCK! Day 20: Sarah Walker, Warrior Princess

Deadlier than a cobra. More vicious than a wolverine. Nimble like a cheetah. Sweet like a tangerine.

Sarah Walker is one badass mother fraker! And a softy at heart who just wants to be loved.

As I already discussed in the article about her family, she grew up tough and that made her tougher. At least on the outside. But that toughness only masked the side of her that was evident to her future husband early on.

Sarah is a kind person. And though she keeps much of her emotions tucked away much of the time, she is capable of big expressions of her feelings, in very few words. Take her marriage vows.

Chuck, you're a gift. You're a gift I never dreamed I could want or need, and every day I will show you that you're a gift that I deserve. You make me the best person I could ever hope to be and I want to spend and learn and love the rest of my life with you.

"Talky?"

Man, she is adorable in that scene. Go back and watch it.

Anyway, she has always acted out her feelings. Put her life in danger for the man she loved. Put her life in danger for the people the man she loved... loved. Though, for a large part of the first two seasons, she was like a clenched fist of emotions. She would sometimes relax her grip but tighten up again quickly, ready to punch the next person who tried to hurt her.

Thankfully, through persistence on both their parts, Chuck and Sarah were able to crack through the foundation of pain and distrust and find each other (awww) and live happily ever after... provided they both live that long.

While Sarah's emotional angel side is who she is for the people she loves, she is one dangerous little devil when you mess with her. Especially if you are a man. Sarah can pretty much beat down any male on the planet, provided she isn't tied up (and even then, just give her time). She should wear a t-shirt that says "Men, You Should Run!"

Her weakness seems to be fighting other women. Maybe it's the height or size difference, or maybe she is like Fezzik (Andre the Giant) in THE PRINCESS BRIDE where it is just more difficult fighting in simpler situations. Whatever it is, she needs an extra punch or two to take those pesky ladies down.

Arguably the best fight in the series is inside a car, against a woman, in Chuck Versus the Best Friend. That's some Jackie Chan type stuff right there. Though, there have been so many great fight sequences with Sarah that it is difficult to make a top 10 list (maybe I will do that eventually). But another highlight fight would be her taking on Casey in Chuck Versus the Helicopter, the second episode in the series.

Thinking more about it, I would probably have to do a top 50 Sarah fight scenes list.

Let's close this one out with this:

Sarah Walker, once Jenny Burton, born Sam Lisa [something], now Sarah Bartowski, is a character I will miss looking forward to seeing every week. Not just because of her ass kicking, or her kindness, or her love for Chuck and his world, but because Yvonne Strahovski is a major hottie and a talented actor that we've had the pleasure of seeing 60+ hours of, creating a character we love.

I do look forward to the rest of her career but I'm sure I will always remember her most fondly for the gorgeous and complex CIA agent who fell in love with a nerd whose hair sometimes made funny animal shapes.

    Deadlier than a cobra
    More vicious than a wolverine
    Nimble like a cheetah
    Sweet like a tangerine

  5. I don't think anyone could say enough about Yvonne's portrayal of " Saah Walker . The emotions she could emote without saying a single word were just beautiful . Her facial expressions , either dramatic or funny were always a highlight of the show for me . Her " flash face " in wedding planner , her heartbreak in pink slip at the train station , her reaction watching the video of Chuck in 3 words to name a few . My all time favorite though is her reaction when she thinks that Chuck was blown up at the end of vs the best friend . All that emotion was just heart wrenching , the look of horror , the tears then the relief when she sees him . I cry every time I watch that scene . It's just amazing .

Now I'm crying writing this just thinking back through the years of all her moments and there is only a few more days til the END .

    1. Just to add one more point . The last episode vs the bullet train was one of the better eps so far , but I cant bring myself to watch it 2nd time , just because you feel everything that Sarah is feeling . The last half is so emotional , and when Quinn is using those cards , Yvonne is breaking my heart with her performance there .

    4. Don't make me hunt you down and punch you in the nose. It's season five.

A season is one cycle. A series is the entire cycle. Fuckin' Brits and their misunderstanding of the language they created.

  6. You think thats sad ? "I can't stop crying. I cried every day, this whole month," Yvonne Strahovski says. "I've just been crying every single day. I'm going to cry now. It's horrible. I cried yesterday when I did my last fight scene ever." Asked for her favorite episodes, Strahovski offers up the Sarah-centric "Chuck vs. Phase Three" from Season 4, but she also says the final season has been a string of highlights for her. "We've bonded a lot more, knowing that it's the end, especially the last month. We've been hanging out a lot more as a cast, and just allowing ourselves the time to soak it all up before it ends." :-[

  12. Love the title and loved the articles and can't and can wait for the last 2 episodes of Chuck.

  13. I don't know what I'm more sad about. The fact that the show is ending tomorrow night, or the fact that my Twitter feed won't be full of new CHUCK-related articles and clips everyday from various sources including GF! Absolutely loved this article, quite possibly my favorite installment of 21 Days of Chuck yet. Best of luck with your 91 Weeks of Chuck!

    1. That's what I'm wondering. I think I'm going to have withdrawal symptoms to the Chuck-related reading as much as I have to the show.

    2. Thanks, Ryan.

The 91-weeks of CHUCK... at least the way I am thinking about doing it right now, is going to take me 400 weeks to complete. So, I am currently scaling it back in my mind so I can perhaps do one per week.

  14. Thanks for all the articles HGF its been helping me get through the fact that I can't watch the last 4 episodes for another 2 weeks. I'm gonna miss catching up with Sarah Walker everytime I fly home. No other show has ever compared to this one in terms of emotional impact and just how easy it was to care for all the characters. Especially Sarah. My opinion for best Sarah Moments are as follows.

Sad Sarah - The Break Up - the end scene with sarah tearing up while chuck talks to her about there future together.

Adorable Sarah - Cliffhanger/Seduction Impossible - the scene you described and the scene on valentines day with the angel outfit.

Fighting Sarah - Tango - One of my favorite episodes and sarah fought it out with another hottie, finishing with a slow-mo handcuff punch. I'm a sucker for that weinerlicious outfit.

I still havent decided on Mad Sarah yet but she looks so hot when she's angry so its hard to decide.

Thanks again for all the chuck articles and coverage over the years, and I guess starting next month my regular donation will have to go here instead of Chuckgasmic.

    1. If this is the Daniel that donates every month then let me just say... Daniel, you are the best. Seriously, the best.

No, really. You are essentially the reason I kept ChuckGasmic.com going. Why I kept doing podcasts. Why I even kept writing CHUCK articles. So, when people say they enjoy these articles, thank Daniel. Those regular donations are why I didn't just stop doing it all.

Simple as that. Hell, part of why I even pushed for a third Chuckfest was because I was still inspired by the kindness of the people who donated... and the #1 person has always been Daniel.

Granted, there have been about 20 people who have donated, some big, but none like Daniel. So, thank you again. And again.

If only there were a few more people like you, I would write 20 articles a week.

  15. Thanks Daniel. Everybody give Daniel a hip hip hooray !!!!

  16. It is the same Daniel and im gald I was able to make a difference on the site. Although knowing that I had even the smallest hand in chuckfest makes me even sadder I had to work that weekend, and I have had some cool figures to give some of the cast when I got there. Oh well Zach's got them now. Anyway I will continue to donate for the forseeable and unforseeable future, as long as you throw in another Yvonne article here and there so we can all continue to reminisce about the good ol' days of the deadly female vixen Sarah Walker. Remember the time she stabbed Casey with a corn dog stick. I do.

    1. It is too bad you couldn't attend. I guess I will have to try to make Chuckfest4 happen some day. :)

Speaking of Sarah and the corn dog sticks, I am obviously going to be doing a top 10 or 20 fight scenes on CHUCK list. That fight will definitely be on there. Not to mention the 91-weeks of CHUCK I will be doing that... right now, seems like the most insane thing I could ever do... I'm kind of afraid it will kill me if I do what I had originally planned. Maybe I should start small and see if I can sustain that for some time.

      P.S.

I don't often like to talk about it, because I find complaining about one's financial situation is what manipulative douchebags do, but there have been months when I was going to be screwed, bill wise, if not for you. Just wanted to point that out. You saved my ass in more ways than one. And I mean, several times when I was at the end of my options... and there Daniel saved the day.

  17. Sarah's vows are perhaps one of my favorite TV wedding vow ever.

I just flove her so much. Such a great character and it's been awesome seeing her development and growth these past 5 seasons.

She wants to quit the spy life, settle down and raise a family with the man she loves. Damn that girl better get her dream happy ending.

  18. Sarah Walker's story has been my favorite part of Chuck. I mean I love Chuck and Morgan, Ellie and Devon and what would Chuck be without John Casey and his grunts? I love the BuyMore and all it's craziness too but Sarah Walker has been my favorite character ever since I discovered Chuck at the beginning of Season 2. She has a heart of gold just like Chuck but couldn't show it. Yvonne made Sarah Walker real. She made us love her and care for her as much as we do Chuck. Here's hoping Sarah Walker finally gets her happily ever after.
