May 2012 is CHUCK Month!

People have asked me "Why is May CHUCK month?" And I look at them as if they are strange... like, shouldn't EVERY month be CHUCK month? Isn't that the question you should be asking?

Though, I do have a logic behind choosing this month.

The month of May in the year 2012, is the final time we have a new DVD/BD release of a television season of CHUCK. And that should be reason enough to celebrate 5-seasons of a show we all love. If you didn't love it, then why are you here?!

Speaking of the DVD/BD release, you should make it a point to order one, or both, or multiple copies of both, at the links below.

Chuck: The Complete Fifth Season

Chuck: The Complete Fifth Season [Blu-ray]

There is also an apparent BOX SET for CHUCK that I still haven't heard much about and may or may not contain an actual box... set... or is, what I suspect it to be, just all the seasons in one package (which I do not consider a real box set). However you can order that at the links below:

Chuck: Seasons One - Five

Chuck: Seasons One - Five [Blu-ray]

I don't know why the "box set" is more expensive than buying individual seasons but if you want to give WB extra bundles of cash, go for it. Otherwise, I'd order the seasons separately.

I realize some of you don't buy DVD/BD's anymore, or so hated the season 5 finale that you refuse to buy it, but I know that many of you want to see a movie some day, or a continuation of the story, and the ONLY WAY THAT WILL HAPPEN is if people buy lots and lots and lots of this stuff. Because WB isn't going to entertain great ideas for continuing the series until they think they can make a profit.

Our star, and all around great guy, Zachary Levi had some great ideas and detailed them here in this interview... jump to 11:50 point for the start of the interview:

As I have been saying for months, and Zac details, WB isn't open to any new age ideas for bringing the show back until they see a return on their investment. That's where fans come in.

Yeah, yeah, I know... you don't want to hear it. "I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO ACTUALLY WORK FOR SOMETHING! I WANT TO JUST SIGN PETITIONS AND PRETEND LIKE IT MEANS SOMETHING!"

Sorry... but if you want a movie, you're going to have to kick some ass, take some names, and spend money. The only thing you should be signing is your name to a list called "I Bought CHUCK Season 5!"

Alright, enough of my preaching.

But What Will We Get During CHUCK Month?!
So we're not just going to post one article this month and expect you all to do the heavy lifting by yourselves. We plan on writing several articles; a handful of CHUCK 91 features; a bunch of top 5/10 lists or podcasts; and maybe a surprise or two if I can make it happen!

I also plan on digging up some old material that some of you may have missed, including fan videos, events, and articles. These things should be released every few days so come back often. Though, I am debating whether or not to release anything on the weekends. It all depends on what you all want... so comment below.

We're also taking requests, so if there is something you want to see, let us know. WE WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Maybe.

CHUCK Vs. Bo - 5.10: The Frosted Tips Strike Back

Bo Derek graces CHUCK with her presence and name in this week's episode.

Apparently Morgan, while under the influence of his frosted tips and the poisonous Intersect, stole some Intersect glasses from a bad dude and Bo Derek. The latter playing herself as an evil spy who bangs the rainbows out of Grimes.

Grimes' paralleling story is that Alex got the rainbows banged out of her by a surfer dude while Morgan and her were on a break (or she cheated on him, as if anyone cares). Why do these story lines? Shrug. Because it's kind of funny? Because it leads us to ridiculous stuff? Don't ask. Just enjoy.

The main plot of this one is that Chuck and Sarah have decided to stop going on dangerous missions and instead work on cyber terrorism and the like. Everyone but Casey is all for it, though the team talks him into it eventually by calling attention to just how many times he's been shot (great little nod to fan discussions over the years).

But when this Intersect issue comes up, they have to go and complete just one more dangerous mission or worry about that device coming back to haunt them, or something. They go. Hilarity and action ensues, and eventually the team does find the Intersect glasses hidden away in a game display at another Buy More (with some gender roles reversed from their Burbank Buy More doppelgangers).

Just as the gang thinks they are out of the spy game, Chuck gets kidnapped and Sarah and Casey have to go save him. I won't even mention that they could have called the CIA/NSA/FBI/SWAT and everyone else to come back them up because this show so rarely deals with that realm of reality (and mind you, MOST entertainment avoids these realities as well just to make their stories somehow work), but the two get into a big shootout and are overwhelmed. Sarah, having brought the Intersect glasses to trade for Chuck, sees no other way out of the situation (and she is known to do wildly irrational things when she thinks any harm could come to her man), so she Intersects herself and kicks the living shit out of her opponents.

I have held onto this moment for some time. I am a bit surprised they even ran with it. But when I initially heard they were keeping it in, I was worried. It sounded like a really bad idea (like Morgan getting the Intersect). It feels like the writers really ran out of ideas this season. AND YET, that moment worked for me. Sure, Sarah shouldn't really need the Intersect. But it is difficult to show what a Sarah using the Intersect would actually look like on this budget. So, we have to suspend some disbelief and accept that Sarah looking only somewhat more badass with the Intersect would be SO MUCH MORE BADASS with another $1 million in the budget. And in that moment, I actually felt a rush. I enjoyed it.

I didn't mention the Jeffster side story which was HILARIOUS! Yeah, I know, if they always had this forget-shit gas, why didn't they use it before? Because the writers just thought of it, obviously. I forgive that kind of writing since, again, it is done on virtually every show except a couple of cable shows that are able to write all their scripts before they shoot their episodes. Anyway, Jeff and Lester being repeatedly gassed, put back in the same car, in the same place, with the same exact conditions, and both always figuring out that it had to have been Team B's doing, never stopped being funny to me. Well, maybe until the end when the Subway commercial showed up in the form of Big Mike.

I laughed a number of times during this one and enjoyed it, but also felt some of the pacing was off and that it dragged a bit too much in places. One of the best working elements is still Chuck and Sarah simply having a conversation. You would think the writers, dealing with an ever decreasing budget, would have just given us more of those moments THAT WORK SO WELL but no. So, we get weak pacing, poorly structured plots, and some strangely written episodes this season. I'm not saying I haven't enjoyed a majority of them, but I am coming away from this season feeling a bit like I did at the end of season 4. Underwhelmed by the season while still having enjoyed individual episodes.

Alright, let's get to my favorite portion of every review.

QUOTABLES!
The team meets to discuss the idea to shift the company to a safer line of work.
Morgan: Well, I love it, okay. You know how I feel about bullets. Which is to say negatively, okay? This is fantastic!
Casey: Where do I fit in? What am I? Chief Googler?
Sarah: Well, actually, you'd be doing a lot of the same stuff that you already do.
Chuck: Yeah, I mean, we're still gonna need field ops to recover stolen systems and breaching company security to find their weak spots.
Casey: [grunts]
Morgan: Plus, wouldn't it be lovely to not get shot at?
Chuck: Exactly! Aren't you sick of getting shot at?
Sarah: Or getting shot. I mean, you get shot a lot.
Casey: Not considering how much I get shot at.

After waking up in a crashed car with booze and panties, memory-wiped Jeff and Lester begin to piece things together.
Jeff: Lester, something really weird is up.
Lester: Yeah, last, last thing I remember is that there's something going on underneath the Buy More. Yeah, that's right. With Bartowski, and Grimes, and Casey, and that whorey blond.

While on the mission and Grimes having to sex up Bo Derek to get information, Sarah playfully taunts Chuck's star crush.
Sarah: Hey, Chuck, how's it going with Bo? Have you had any sneak peeks of your childhood crush's boobies?
Chuck: What?! No! [pause] Shut up.

Later, when Bo reveals herself to be an enemy agent, Sarah saves Chuck and Morgan by knocking her out.
Sarah: [smiling] Sorry I had to do that to your girlfriend.
Chuck: Oh, you didn't hit her in the face, did ya? [Sarah's smile disappears] I'm kidding! I'm kidding. But it is Bo Derek.

If I had to rate this episode, I'd give it:

89 out of 100

Good humor, some good action, fun references, and a thrilling ending (we could debate the necessity of it all until the end of time) but like much of season 5, flawed. Let me also say that I thought Bo Derek did a fine job. Not that I expected anything else. She is a capable actor.

Being a CHUCK Fan: 2007-2012

Today, 7 December, 2011, marks the final day that the show CHUCK will film a new episode. It is over and there is no "saving" it. When the actors leave the set today, they will never return. The sets have either already been broken down or are in the process. Plaques have been made and the deal has been sealed for eternity. It is a sad day for all those involved. Not a dry eye in the house.

But what makes this show special, above all others? What made CHUCK unique other than the obvious story, cast, writing, and setting? That every year, without fail, the cast, crew, and its fans worried from the end of season 1, 2, 3, and 4 whether or not the show would come back. And even going into season 5, would the show get more than 13? Those who have stuck around have struggled to just simply enjoy the show they loved, because that worry was always there.

Will this be the year it all ends? Will this be the final episode or do we get more? Is that how it will all end?

And every year after season 1, the show got more and more and more episodes, even as the ratings dropped. Mostly because NBC itself was in such a rut it didn't have a better option. And WB, the owners of the show, felt CHUCK could make them money in syndication (barely reported fact: CHUCK is a big merchandising seller), so they kept licensing the show for less and less so NBC would keep it. And fans, most certainly through their love and passion for the show, even if delusional, created campaign after campaign, after sometimes insane and totally unrealistic campaign to save the show.

That is something some CHUCK fans never seemed to run out of: unflinching faith in their ability to keep the show around longer. Sure, I could sit here and point out how ridiculous the notion is that fans will ever actually "save" a show, but it doesn't matter. Because they believed it and they attempted it, over and over. So, those fans who participated were in a constant state of grasping at straws, to never let their love die.

Of course it has died, but what a death. Nearly cancelled at 13 episodes. Then 35 episodes. Then 48 episodes. Then 54 episodes. Then 67 episodes. Then 78 episodes. It finally ended at 91, but not before the writers could construct an actual ending, knowing it was all over.

Also, WB made it to the number of episodes required for syndication, thereby some day making the money back it lost on lowering the licensing fee. And fans got to see a real journey for their characters. They also got to create real goodbyes that the cast and crew was able to enjoy, knowing the end was coming.

It is all kinds of beautiful.

All kinds of perfect.

And though it all ends for the cast and crew today, it doesn't end for us fans until 27 January, 2012. So, today we say goodbye to the process. In 7 weeks we say goodbye to everything else.

CHUCK Season 5: Make it Geek Pr0n

Writer: Head Geek Furious

WARNING: This article is most certainly not safe for unsophisticated kids.

Let's not beat around the bush any longer. CHUCK (the lovely show on NBC and the #4 show on the Geek Furious best of all time list) is not a family show. Despite what some fans suggest and what people who work on the show may restate over and over, Nielsen data totally contradicts this idea. In truth, not even 10% of the total viewers of the show are not old enough to have experienced the ton of fun that is puberty.

Wait, not even 5% are old enough to have experienced the joy of shaving! What does that tell us? That a vast majority of the CHUCK viewers are adults who do not watch the show with their kids (yes, I know YOU do but that means you represent the 4% or whatever it is). So let's dispense with the "this is a family show" crap and go right for the jugular.

I am pleading with the CHUCK show runners to make this show what it should have always been. Total, unadulterated GEEK porn!  Well, as much as one can do on network TV.

Now that I have your attention, this is what I mean:
  • Morgan has to break up with Alex, or she has to break up with him.  This way Morgan can get super hot sex action in every episode.  You could even make it so she sticks around to judge him for his slutty ways.
  • Sarah (#1 top 10 hot in geek) has to feel unclean in every episode and have to take a shower or bath or just relax in a hot tub or something.  What is the point of having a hot chick on a show if she never showers?  Seems like a no-brainer.
  • Casey must get a girlfriend and she should be the smokingest hottest sluttiest slut ever.  She should be all over him all the time trying to get her freak on because she finds him irresistibly hawt.  Casey should be horrified by this but be unable to stop her because he is a male and we are powerless against super hot chicks who are sluts.  Oh and without a doubt this chick needs to have some very safe and boring job like ninja librarian, kung fu secretary, or an 89D (explosive ordnance disposal specialist).
  • Ellie should be in heat the entire season and need to claw at and violate her husband's autonomy whenever he is around.
  • Captain Awesome should be perpetually shirtless (I'm looking out for the lady geeks).
  • Sarah should demand the Buy More staff more ladies.  Due to the fact that the main crew is on a mission, Jeff and Lester are put in charge and hire strippers.  Yes, this has kind of been done (with super models) but this time the strippers stick around for the whole season.  They try really hard to do their jobs but find that keeping their clothes off is a very difficult thing to do.  Sarah is not happy about this but the stripper girl squad ends up being so successful at selling, and the team is so in need of money after losing about a billion of it in a lawsuit, that she begrudgingly keeps them on.
  • Cole must return and walk around in a towel for an episode.  Also, he should sex up at least 5 of the Buy More stripper chicas (hablo espaƱol?).
  • Alex, in a jealous rage after finding out that Morgan is banging hard bodied skanks, should hook up with her father's agent and military buddies.  Then go find a homeless guy and kill him to get the darkness out of her system.  Let's face it, sex with multiple partners only goes so far in suppressing the demons.
  • Chuck and Sarah have to end up at one of those sex parties Sarah talked about in season 4.  This time she isn't kidding and they are both hopped up on some kind of super slut drug that drives people into wild orgies.
  • Anna Wu must return.  She was a freak so I don't need to paint a picture of the potential.
  • Hannah should return to join the nerd herd crew again.  She and Anna could fight for Morgan's attention.  Eventually they would end up in a hot lesbo scene.
  • The show needs to have more wet t-shirt contests in the BM.  What is that?  They have never had wet t-shirt contests on the show?  BINGO.  No wonder the ratings are low.
  • Two words: suicide girls.  It's not a new teenage fad.  It's inky and pasty.  OK, so that is kind of a new teenage fad but minus the vampires, and men between the ages of 18-34 really seem to dig it.
  • Have Chuck get wet more often (I am looking out for the geek ladies again) and assaulted by smokin' short-skirt wearing, big jubs owning girlies who want his geek hotness.
If anyone else has any geek porn ideas for the final season, toss them in here.  You know the writers will read it.

The 13 episodes of season 5, beginning October 21st as first reported here a month before NBC confirmed it, will be the last for the show.
