Review - FRINGE 5.07: 'Five-Twenty-Ten'

In this week's episode, something happens. Then something else. Finally, something happens that makes you go "wooooo!" as you wait weeks for whatever comes next.

I truly don't have much to say about this episode. So let me sum it up in some bullets.

  • Walter's complete brain makes him do bad things and love won't change that.
  • Peter can see the future and shit because he's turning into an Observer.
  • Olivia is worried about Peter.
  • The Observers still haven't gotten around to noticing those Etta "Resist" signs. I suppose they could think they are advertisements for a new deodorant for the dead.

The only truly effective thing that this episode did was shit on the ridiculous notion often bandied about by television people that a 13-episode season means meatier episodes and no fluff.

Clearly they could have dished out a majority of this shit in one act. Instead, they stretched it out for an entire episode. Lame.

If I had to rate this episode, and I truly don't, I'd give it:

60 out of 100

What did you think?

  1. I love Peter's powers and want to see more but the rest was dragged out and boring. Suddenly Walter is turning into an evil dick. Weird.

    1. Yeah totally, because Walternate was such a nice guy, and the Walter we never met, the one who's brain chunks were still intact, the one who let his assistant die in a fire, the one who's son said in the pilot "so my father is Dr. Frankenstein," so weird that Walter would, brain intact, be turning into one of those guys.

      Derp.

  2. Episode was written by the same guy who wrote the dreary "The Recordist." Nuff said.

    1. Like HGF said on the podcast the direction of the ep is on the showrunner not writers.

      Delete
    2. Um, no, if the script is terrible then it's the writer's fault.

    3. You are both right... or... I am both right?

The overall scope of an episode is the responsibility of the show runner. The content within the episode is on all the writers in the room (except on shows where there is no writers room and individual scripts are completely controlled by the show runner).

Sure, the writer of the episode is to blame for a weak script. But an individual writer rarely decides the outline of what will happen in an episode. That's what the show runner is for and that was my problem with this episode.

    4. Thank you, but I know what my criticism is and it's that the screenplay itself (not the episode content) was weak. The dialogue was nothing but huge chunks of exposition, half the time.

The story beats in this episode are fine. The outline is fine. It's that they were sketched out so clunkily in this particular episode.

      Delete
    5. The episode content was the weakest part since it forced the fuckin' exposition by containing so little actual story.

  3. PS- If Walter hadn't asked Nina to take the brain pieces out of his head again, I might have thrown something at the screen. Since that is the OBVIOUS goddamn thing to do, instead of relying on the mystical power of Peter's love. Not that I mind him relying on the mystical Pacey Power... but why not try the obvious solution first, eh?

  4. At least no one is going to argue about Josh or Anna this week. The whole thing was so weak I forgot to care about performances.

    1. However, not even a writing/directing job this bad could kill the chemistry between John Noble and Joshua Jackson. I'm sorry, but whenever they have a mo, I'm just all melty.

      The bromance, man. The bromance!

  5. Etta was the best part of this season. The episodes have all been weak since they killed her off.

  6. I swear if what saves Peter is that he has to look into Olivia's eyes then I am going to quit any show produced by these hacks JH Whyman and Pinkner, lol. Even JJ Abrahams may get my wrath, but seriously man how bad was this episode? ugh.......

  7. Peter's transformation was cool, his solo mission was awesome and the final montage was great. The rest was just okay. I'm tired of Walter's recurring brain dilemma. Pieces of it in, pieces of it out. They have replayed the same theme a hundred times, but that's okay. That's the way he is. It's just that I'm getting more and more bored with it. He got a big monologue about it last episode and now he wasted 2 long scenes with the same stuff.

But that wasn't the problem for me, the real problem was the many drawn out close ups of everyone's faces, particularly Olivia's. Way to waste time! We get it, she is the main character and she's worried. She said she's worried 100 times, no need to show me her pores. She didn't change her expression during the whole episode. What the hell!

I was worried Anil would get caught because of Peter. We need to keep some of the new faces around, so I hope they don't kill him off... yet.

Walter trusted Bell after what he did in S4? WTH, man?

WHO IS PUTTING UP ALL THOSE POSTERS OF ETTA?!!

  8. Not sure why they even bothered bringing back the other characters. Olivia fans are FUCKING annoying the hell out of me with their constant whining over Olivia not being the most important in the room. They attack josh and Peter for finally given a chance to shine. They brag away when Anna played 5 versions of her character but Peter gets to play an observer and all people do is whine.

I hate this fanbase, I hate Olivia and I cant stand Anna torv.

  9. Why isn't the story advancing?????? :( :( :( Nothing, absolutely nothing new has happened tonight, they've stretched five minutes of action into fifty useless minutes... Everything is so slow... This means the ending is going to be too rushed... And probably not satisfying at all. I sense another one of those: "I believe you call it... love" tricks. Awful episode...
After seeing the promo for 5x08 I'm suspecting that Peter is Windmark... There is a scene where they fight and they bleed in exact same place... And then Windmark tells him: "Everything happened exactly the way I planned it..."
So probably Walter will use the Lil' O September to fight his own son... And of course they had to bring back William Bell as a potential recurrent villain...
This show should be called Pieces of Walter:
S1: Pieces from his safety deposit boxes are scattered all around USA
S2: Pieces of his brain are hidden inside other people's heads.
S3: Pieces of his machine are buried all around the globe.
S4/5: September gives Walter the knowledge to defeat the Observers, then scatters the memories in Walter's brain so that they must be "unified" in order to constitute a whole. Later we learn that Walter created videotapes which are hidden in scattered locations, which together constitute the complete plan... There is a genuine Horcrux hunt and there is that talk about the pieces of his brain again.

    1. Thank you, kind sir! Being obsessed with Fringe kinda made me come up with and write that analysis.
What kind of cliffhanger was that in the end? That's no way to end the episode. I mean, we all knew Peter was going to lose his hair! That was no surprise at all.
The writers made a mistake, kinda like in season 4, when in the episode 4.19. we got the glimpse of the future and Peter's and Olivia's daughter, and then, in the season finale, Walter shot Olivia but it wasn't worrying at all... Since the audience could see she was going to be brought back to life and have a daughter somehow... So we weren't emotionally invested...
Why do I keep calling Windmark Hallmark in my mind? :)
I'm going to share several of my looney theories with you guys....
-I think I might finally know who is putting all those posters of Etta up... It's Peter himself... He needs to see them everywhere as a constant reminder because her face is the only thing that now links him to his human side of personality... He forgot everything else but her... And he's afraid he'll forget her too. So he just time travels from the future to the past (or vice versa? :) )and desperately puts all those posters up all around the town...
-I wonder when will we get the answer about Observerettes Wyman promised. They could be like dwarves, we've seen them, but we can't tell they're ladies. Also, female Observers could be called Gossipers. :)
On the other hand, maybe there are no female Observers because they endanger the male Observer's coolness, calm and composure... Women symbolize emotions so Observers are uncomfortable around them, they remind them of how they were before they got that tech implanted in them... Or there is a Queen Bee, and the male Observers are just drones in the beehive who do her bidding... That would be a cool twist.
-Oh, I can see the glorious ending approaching:
Olivia in the next episodes becomes strong badass again and the heart of the team, seeing how Walter and Peter are both struggling with their identities in their alternate realities :) She defeats everything and everyone (including the Head Observer William Bell) with the sheer power of love, Walter removes the tech from Peter's neck (Peter will beg him to do so just like Walter once begged William Bell to remove the pieces of his brain) and Olivia will be pregnant in the end... Oh, and they might jump back in time to revisit the now Observerless cute park scene and they'll get to see little Etta again and raise her as if nothing has happened...

      Delete
    2. ah, so you want olivia to defeat everything and everyone and be the hero!
and what are peter and walter suppose to do in the mean time?
It's so clear that you are an anna torv fangirl and the reason you don't like the peter storyline, is because it's doesnt have olivia center. If they made olivia into a female observer, you would have loved the story.

The peter becoming an observer story saved this boring season. He is the only one, besides walter of course, who keeps things excited on fringe.

Did you see the promo for 508? yeah, that's right, peter is the one who is going to fight windmark!
OLiva is not FBI anymore and she doesnt have her powers neither.
why can't her fanatic deluded fanbase understand that?

    3. No, not really, I think you misunderstood me... I like all the three actors equally and I have always seen them as a trio... Anna was great in the end of Season 2 and during Season 3, but I really disliked her in Season 1, and lately, also, her acting is quite wooden and bland (just like in the first season),I don't know why she has all those ups and downs, she is a really strange actress... This is the first time I am watching her on TV screen and I think Fringe could've found a better female lead to begin with, like Yvone Strahovski who is now on DEXTER...
John Noble is a strong constant and I absolutely love the way he acted all those Walter variants! He's probably my favorite of the three.
Josh has been OK since the beginning and his acting has improved immensely in the last two seasons... He is a solid actor. Also, I do like "Peter is an Observer" story arc because it's interesting seeing Josh in focus for the first time and you are right, it really does add something to this season, it's a cool twist... I also like Josh as a person, he is intelligent and goofy and I love listening to his interviews and watching him at Comic Cons... He behaves like one of the fans, he expresses himself excellently and whenever he analyzes the plot, everything he says is very logical and up to the point. He's cute, too. :)
The theory I wrote about above came to me because I see that the writers are constantly emphasizing how Walter is slowly becoming evil and Peter is an Observer, detached from his human side... They are both losing themselves. So I was just speculating where could the plot go next, since the only two "sane" :) members of the team are Agnes and Anna now... Probably the girls will have to save the world... Just a thought... I am not quite sure where this is going... But I'll watch it until the end...
The promo for 508 was great, by the way! It made me think that Peter might actually be Windmark or a Head Observer, I don't know why... Maybe because Windmark sounded so satisfied when he told Peter: "Everything happened exactly the way I planned it"... It's like he intentionally wanted Peter to put that tech in his neck... And when they fight they bleed from the same place... Maybe they are the same person...
      Or I'm just overthinking this.
Three weeks without Fringe. :( Even though I don't like this season too much, but I've always been attached to this show... :(

    4. sorry, Evelyn. I did misunderstood you. It's just frustrates me that Joshua is doing a such great job, but those jealous, feminist and hypocrites anna torv fans make me so mad with their "i want olivia to be badass/central again"

    5. It is amazing isn't it? Anna torv played 5 versions of her character and nobody complained, they even complained ad nauseum that she deserved an Emmy

And now josh, the only actor who didn't get that chance EVERYONE ELSE HAD to play an alter-ego, people want to complain about ANNA TORVS FUCKING SCREENTIME?

Funny how when Peter was gone for a good 4 episodes straight, Peter fans didn't complain about Olivia and what she was doing but it's unacceptable that josh gets that chance (BEFORE THE SHOW FUCKING ENDS) this year and her fans don't care.

I hope josh pulls a "Michelle Williams" and is very successful in film and shows those Anna torv assholes that not only Anna deserve success.

  11. What the hell is wrong with anna torv, she has like one expression during the entire episode!
It seems that anna doesnt even bother to try to act anymore.
She ruined the scene between olivia and nina. Blair did the crying and showing the emotions, while wooden olivia/anna should stood there.

  12. You know what's really pathetic? John noble fans have more respect for josh and Anna. They are able to appreciate John's performances without bashing josh and Anna.

I guess it's only cause Walter doesn't get the physical stuff right? I mean it's WRONG for somebody other than Olivia to get badass moments right?

The more they talk about hating the peter arc the more jealous her fans are.

i have one thing to say to her fans: KARMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember all the previous seasons, when peter was in the background all the time and her fans were making fun of him? And when peter fans were complaining about it, we were told to shut up and enjoy the damn show?

      KARMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. You know it's funny, Olivia isn't supposed to look concerned or care about another human being because she is the MAIN character but Peter is expected to care about Olivia and be concerned about her 24/7.

Sorry I am through with shows led by women. Lol, I am a woman myself but I can't take the feminism since the lead is a WOMAN, her costars should do nothing and not have their own storylines or their own importance, the utter whining that only the main character is the only one to fight while everyone else is boring, bland and useless (which is EXACTLY what people have said about Peter, astrid, broyles and Nina) .

I'm done, thank you Anna torv and her fanbase, you ruined fringe for me and strong female leads.

    1. i had never a problem with Buffy being the lead or jennifer garner being the star in alias, but somehow anna torv fans made me hate it. It's because her fans are forcing us the "olivia is the lead" shit down our throat.

I never intented to hate the olivia character or anna torv when i started watching the show, but they made me hate her and her bloody character!!!!

      Delete
    2. Cause the difference between Buffy and Fringe is that ALL the characters of Buffy had their own importance. I wonder how Olivia fans would feel watching Buffy's friends become powerful themselves, especially Willow or how Buffy DARED to react to her best friend's issues. (I thought that what a HERO was, a person who despite having their own problems, has a heart enough to help others) but oh no! Olivia is not allowed to care about others, people are supposed to care about Olivia since she is the lead and all.

Funny thing to is how Buffy and her friends ALL fought every single big battle TOGETHER. Nobody was left out.

But Fringe, FORGET IT. Hopefully when fringe ends, anna will go back to australia and her fanbase goes with her. None of the other castmembers deserve to be trashed and treated like they are not worth their own storyline.

      Delete
    3. The Anna Torv fanbase has always been very smug. Now the writers are simply tying up loose ends with a character they've ignored for too long (Peter), and the Torvgrrrls are hopping mad. No amount of focus or attention on Olivia is ever good enough for them. They think it's the Olivia Show.

But what cracks me up is that the Torvgrrls would be just as happy if Olivia ended the season by having a big sex scene with Peter and squeezing out another baby. So much for women's lib.

      Delete
    4. Torvgrrls!!! Absolutely, great name!!!!!

from now on, i'm going to use that name, to discribe her fanbase, if you dont mind.

    1. Dont't let them get to you. They can bash joshua/peter all they want, but you know what? The reviews/critics praise joshua jackson performance, and that's all that really matters.

It means that joshua is doing one hel of a a good job on fringe , but the anna torv fangirls are jealous because of that.

And whose opinion is more important? The anna torv fangirls or the one of the critics along with john noble, michael cervais, Joel whyman, Ari margolis. All of them love joshua performance. And Just go to the twitter of joshua jackson (vancityjax), it's full of praises by viewers who love Joshua jackson performance this season and who watch the show for the storyline and not for the olivia character alone.

her obsessed fanbase are used to see anna torv getting praised along side john noble.
      but gone are those days!!

  19. I wonder if it had been Olivia to put that tech in her head, I'm sure people wouldn't complain. It's obvious to me that people have a problem with PETER BISHOP doing it cause they want Olivia to do it. It's not about Olivia being the active character she was for 4 years, it's about the fact that Peter bishop is the one who got to have a fun role. I mean nobody complained when Olivia was altolivia, bellivia, amberolivia or when Walter was Walternate, young Walter, brown Betty Walter but Peter becomes the observer and it's the whole "Olivia is not doing much, what happened to proactive Olivia! "

People are mad that Peter is doing something and because they love Olivia more, they take their frustration on Peter. That's feminism for you.

    ReplyDelete

    1. oh, if olivia had put the tech on her head, her fans would have found something, anything to justify it.

her fans even managed to justify the bellivia storyline. guess that made total sense *roll eyes*

    2. Remember episode 506, the scene when peter pointed out to oliva where to cross over from the pocketuniverse and olivia was attacked by an observer.

Her whiny fans, were complaining about the fact that peter should have had let olivia go first.

BUT by making olivia stay behind, she had that really cool fight with the observer. The writers thought about her and wanted to give olivia a great scene, which they did.

now if peter would have let oliva go first, then he would have goten that fight scene with the observer.
Don't her fans get it, that the writers intended to let olivia behind so she could have her cool scene.

damned if you do and damned if you don't!

  21. I hear a lot about that olivia's arc is going to kick off on episode 508.

Now my question is; why couldnt anna torv fangirls just enjoyed this past 3 episodes (peter arc)?

Is that too much to ask, 3 fucking episodes!!!!!!!!

I'm so sorry for every tv-show or movie, anna torv will appear on in the future...

Hollywood better gives anna torv the lead in everything or her fans will start their tantrum.

    1. Exactly, they "miss" Olivia? How about Olivia being gone for 4 episodes straight like Peter was? Or how Peter fans had to up with watching peters arc (shapeshifters) being shortened and never bought again just so Olivia can play bellivia for 3 episodes? Or watching Joshua Jackson being the only one to not play a double while Anna played 5 people and people criticizing josh for it? Or watching Peter's machine storyline being given to Olivia just so she can use her powers?

People complain about sexism in films and tv shows by yet turn around and bitch when a man has his arc. I wonder if people got mad when spike or angel or every other male villian is just as powerful as buffy is. That's right, men have no power or is weak and the women are strong. Bullshit.

People don't like that Olivia was given less to do...and had it been switched, if Olivia was the one to get focused on while Peter who was the lead and was given less to do, I'm sure nobody would bitch. They would probably brag about it.

To be honest, I hope Olivia doesn't get focused on, her fans have treated Peter and josh like shit.

  22. OMFG! I wish Olivia fans would shut the fuck up about Olivia and her fucking powers. unless I haven't been watching the same show for the last 5 years, Olivia was able to save the day without them.
