21-Days of CHUCK! Day 15: The Captain Believes in You

Devon Woodcomb sure is Awesome! The guy can do virtually anything and do it better than everyone. Yet he is also the kindest character on the show. In his mind, anyone can become awesome too.

Let me just say right up front that, if you don't know by now, Devon Woodcomb is my favorite character on the show. Yep. It's not Chuck or Sarah or Casey or Morgan. It's Captain Awesome. Why? Because he is the most fictional of the characters. He is a gorgeous hunk of a man, who is a surgeon, and a capable spy (when he wanted to be one) who can't lie (there he is a crappy spy), loves only one woman, and is able to do virtually anything simply because he wills it.

You would think that with all those positive qualities that there couldn't be anything else about him that makes him my favorite, but there is. It's that he sees potential in everyone.

Awesome isn't cynical. He isn't condescending. He doesn't see dumb people and smart people. He sees individuals who haven't had the opportunity to become awesome yet.

When Morgan wanted to move out of his mom's place and start a life with Anna Wu, who did he go to for a loan? Devon. Granted, he bought a DeLorean instead.

When Jeff and Lester were struggling to become a band, who did Jeff seek out to give him a shot? Devon.

Who taught Chuck the tango? Sure, he only taught him the lady parts but still... Devon Woodcomb did that!

And he can also throw a mean punch. Just ask John Casey.

As previously stated, he could be a super spy. Well, if not for that one big flaw, the inability to lie well. And that is just another thing that makes him so lovable. He has performance anxiety when he has to do it. Though, he CAN do it when he has to... provided he isn't talking to Ellie. The two times he has tried to lie to her have been disasters.

1. Chuck Versus the Colonel, Awesome discovers that Chuck is a spy and has to keep it from Ellie. When Ellie arrives at home, Devon can barely utter a "yes" without it sounding like a lie. Ellie's interrogation of him nearly causes him to pass out while answer simple questions like "Did Sarah talk to him?" Luckily for him, his then fiance misread the nervousness for wedding jitters.

2. Chuck Versus Operation Awesome, following his disappearance after being kidnapped by Ring agents, and with the assistance of his brother-in-law, Devon tries to explain his absence to Ellie. The resulting discussion may just be the funniest scene in CHUCK history! I think Ellie is still under the impression that Casey has a drinking problem.

So, what are all the reason why you love the captain of Awesome?

  1. He is like Chuck in a way that he can't kill anybody. But according to people like I think John Casey and General Beckman that would not make a good spy. I think if he was not a surgeon and was wanting to go into spying I think he would be awesome.

  2. I enjoy the character and the actor does a good job, but he's too perfect to be real ya know? No one is that awesome in real life.

  3. Awesome is a character that proves showrunners should NOT write 5-year plans before a series starts.

From what I've heard, he wasn't supposed to be more than a temporary character, but the writers took a shine to him.

    1. Writers should have a plan, but keep it flexible. I don't know whether it's true or not, but I remember reading somewhere that he was originally supposed to be an enemy agent or something along those lines. I'm happy that was changed.

It's hard to remember, but I think at first I expected him to be a stereotypical "jock" character for some reason. Luckily that perception changed pretty quickly, he turned out to be just an all-around awesome guy.

    2. Yes, Devon was supposed to be an enemy agent but the writers loved the actor/character so much they just couldn't go through with it.

  4. I loved That scene in Colonel where Awesome thinks Casey is a stalker and goes into his apartment and then Casey shows up.

Awesome is telling Casey that there was a time in his life when he didn't have anything going for him and he didn't have a girlfriend or anything.

    Casey says really.

    Awesome says no not really.

That just cracked me up because of the way Ryan Mcpartlin and Adam Baldwin delivered those lines.

  5. I loved that scene in Cliffhanger where Casey orders Morgan to take out the CIA agent in the hospital that was standing guard.

Morgan was working up to it by talking to himself saying he was going to sweep the leg but Awesome just punched the guy in the face.

Morgan started complaining that he was gonna sweep the leg and then Awesome said in real life you make a fist.

I thought that was really funny and probably the best scene in Cliffhanger.

The role playing scene between Awesome and Ellie was the best scene in Baby.

  6. Awesome is simply awesome :D

That scene in Operation Awesome where they make up the story about Casey STILL makes me laugh out loud every time I see it.

  7. I lied in American hero outside the restaurant Morgan and Casey talk shaw up but Awesome was like totally Chuck you can take this guy. Morgan did make up for it in the next scene saying chuck had charm whereas shaw was stiff as a board but Morgan messed up in other guy when he said 99 out of 10 shaw gets the girl and shaw will get Sarah.

But awesome always, always, always believed in chuck. Never once has he never thought chuck could not do anything or that he could never get the hot girl. Morgan is a little bit more wushu washy and a tool mixing bad advice with the good but awesome is pure...pure awesome!

  8. Remember in Baby when Ellie was talking to Morgan she said for their 1st anniversary Devon was an "ASS" he gave her a signed autograph of himself carrying a canoe wearing suit pants so she broke up with him. But she forgave him because she was in love with him. So the moral of the stories children is Awesome wasn't always awesome. Thank You. But I still like him anyway. 2 more episodes after tonight :-(.

  11. Awesome (haha) article, Magnus. Took the feelings I had for Captain Awesome that I couldn't describe and put them into words. For people saying that he's too fictional, remember this is a comedy. And anyway, that's what makes him great and lots of times, gets the laughs. It's just unbelievably funny that he CAN get any awesomer. My favourite was when he started speaking (Spanish?) And Sarah commented that he really is awesome and Chuck did this cute face in agreement. One of those moments where it was just funny that he can get any awesomer. Also I love the fact that he's a surgeon but he never comes home looking tired and he's always caring about what's going on with everyone else. Cos that's just how Awesome he is ;)

  12. One of the greatest "Awesome" moments for me was when his parents were revealed. What incredible casting, to get Bruce Boxleitner and Morgan Fairchild! "Awesome" has always been a great character as a reflection of all of Chuck's failures. He started out as a two-dimensional stereotype who became a great overall character for the show.

And I would love to see Ryan McPartlin take on a superhero role. Flash or Aquaman?
